How to Choose a Barrier Gate Operator

    Lane Width and Arm Length

Measure the lane from the operator housing to the far side. The arm should cover the full lane, usually with a rest or support on the far end for long arms. In garages with low ceilings, use an articulated (folding) arm so the arm clears the ceiling when it opens.

    Traffic and Speed

Parking lanes can see hundreds of vehicles a day, so look at the cycle rating and open time. LiftMaster Techna, for example, comes in parking, commercial and industrial versions. DC barriers soft start and stop, which is easier on the arm, and they can run on battery during an outage.

    Loops and Vehicle Detection

Barrier lanes rely on vehicle detection:

    • Arming loop ahead of the arm, so a card reader or ticket device only works with a vehicle present.
    • Safety loop under the arm, to keep the arm up while a vehicle is beneath it.
    • Closing or exit loop past the arm, to lower it once the vehicle clears.

Use loop detectors that match the operator plug type, with saw-cut wire or preformed loops.

    Arms, Breakaways and Safety

Breakaway arm mounts let the arm swing free if a vehicle hits it, which saves the operator from damage. Barrier arms are for vehicle lanes only. Mark a separate walkway for pedestrians and post signs at the lane.

    Common Questions

Can a barrier arm be used where people walk?

No. Barrier arms control vehicles. People need a separate path or a pedestrian gate.

Why does a barrier gate need a loop under the arm?

The safety loop tells the operator a car is still in the lane, so the arm will not come down on it.
