Explosion-Proof Control Stations

3 products

Explosion-proof control stations are push button stations in cast metal enclosures rated NEMA 7 and 9 for doors and gates in hazardous areas. Protec Controls carries the 1EBX single button, 2EBX open / close and 3EBX open / close / stop. Typical sites include paint booths, fuel and chemical storage and grain handling.

How to Choose an Explosion-Proof Control Station

    NC vs NO Stop Circuit

The 3EBX is the only station here with a stop button, and it is raised so it is easy to find. Before wiring, find out whether the operator stop input is normally closed or normally open. NC is common on commercial operators because pressing Stop or losing a wire both halt the door. Check the 3EBX stop contact on its product page against the operator diagram. The 1EBX and 2EBX have NO buttons only.

    Choosing Buttons

    • 1EBX: one button on 2 wires, for a single-button input.
    • 2EBX: open and close on 3 wires.
    • 3EBX: open, close and stop on 4 wires.

Contacts on the 1EBX and 2EBX are rated 6 A at 125 VAC.

    Enclosure Rating vs Location

NEMA 7 covers enclosures for locations with flammable gas or vapor. NEMA 9 covers combustible dust. The area classification belongs to the site, so have the site engineer or electrical inspector check the station listing against it before install. Wire through sealed conduit fittings per code. For a pneumatic edge signal in a hazardous area, see door interlock and specialty switches.

    Lockout Options

None of these stations has a keyed lockout. Lockout stations are listed under exterior metal stations; follow your site's hazardous-location rules for where any station can be mounted.

    Common Questions

Can a NEMA 4 station be used in a paint booth?

No. NEMA 4 is a weather and water rating. It does not cover flammable vapor or dust.

Does the station need special wire?

Standard control wire is fine, but it must run in sealed conduit per code. More choices are in all control stations.
