How to Choose a Swing Gate Operator

    Mounting Style

    • Linear actuators (arm style) mount between the hinge post and the gate. Fast to install and common on driveway gates.
    • Pad or post mount operators sit beside the gate and push it with an articulated arm. They handle wide hinge posts and heavier leaves.
    • Underground operators sit in a box under the hinge, so nothing shows above ground. They suit decorative entry gates.

    Leaf Length, Weight and Wind

Size the operator by each leaf, not the full opening. Long leaves put more leverage on the arm, and solid panels act like a sail in wind. Check both the length and weight limits, and step up a size for solid or very tall gates.

Pull to Open or Push to Open

Note which way the gate swings and how far. Most arm actuators handle about 90 degrees of travel. Gates that swing out toward the street, or swing close to 180 degrees, need an operator and bracket setup listed for it. Set positive stops at the open and closed positions.

    Hydraulic or Electromechanical

Hydraulic operators move heavy leaves smoothly and are common on high-traffic gates. FAAC hydraulic models are offered with regular or arctic oil, so pick arctic oil for cold climates. Electromechanical DC operators make it easy to add battery backup or solar.

    Common Questions

Do I need safety devices on the open side of a swing gate?

Often, yes. If the open gate comes close to a wall, fence or building, that gap is an entrapment zone and needs monitored photo eyes or safety edges under UL 325.

Can a swing gate operator work on a sloped driveway?

Only if the leaf clears the ground through its full swing. If the drive rises, use a gate that swings away from the slope or consider a slide gate.
