EMX OWL Manuals & Support

EMX OWL

The EMX OWL is an overhead sensor for automatic doors and industrial gates. It uses microwave to detect vehicle motion and infrared to hold the door for people and vehicles in the opening.

Each function has its own relay. Traffic filters ignore departing vehicles and cross traffic. All settings are made with the OWL-RC remote, which is sold separately.

Identify your model

The OWL has a hinged housing with a microwave tilt adjustment and left and right infrared arrays. It is set up only with the OWL-RC remote. EMX also makes the RAVEN and HAWK 2 sensors. See the RAVEN support page.

Troubleshooting

After power up the green LED flashes while the sensor settles. Wait for a solid green LED before you change settings.

LED codes

  • Solid green: standby.
  • Solid red: presence output on.
  • Flashing red: vehicle motion output on.
  • Yellow: the infrared sensor sees door movement.
  • Green and red flashing: internal sensor error.

Door opens for departing or passing vehicles

  • Turn on the direction filter so only approaching vehicles trigger motion.
  • Use the cross traffic filter to ignore vehicles moving parallel to the door.

Door closes on people or vehicles

  • Raise the infrared sensitivity so less motion is needed to start presence.
  • Check the presence area and the presence timer with the remote.

Common questions

Yes. The OWL has no buttons for setup. The OWL-RC remote sets the presence area, direction filter, hold time and other settings.

Mount it 11.5 to 21.3 ft high above the door or gate opening.

Yes. The microwave motion output can be set to detect vehicles and ignore pedestrians, while the infrared output still holds the door for anyone in the opening.
