Choosing a Gate Keypad, Intercom or Access Controller

Match the System to the Site

    • Single home: a wireless or wired keypad, or a residential cellular call box with a keypad.
    • Small HOA or office: a cellular or phone line entry system with a resident directory and a few dozen codes.
    • Apartments and gated communities: a multi-tenant system with a touchscreen or scrolling directory, plus card or tag readers for residents.
    • Multiple doors and gates: a networked controller such as a 2 door or 4 door panel that ties every reader into one user list.

    Phone Line, Cellular or Network

Older entry systems need a landline. Many sites no longer have one at the gate, so cellular units with a 4G LTE radio and a data plan are now common. IP and Wi-Fi video intercoms use the site network and let residents answer on a smartphone app. Check signal strength at the gate before choosing cellular; an external antenna kit can help in weak spots.

    Cloud Managed or Local

Cloud managed systems let a property manager add or delete codes and cards from a web portal without driving to the site. Local systems are programmed at the keypad or with a PC on site. Cloud systems usually carry a monthly or yearly service fee, so factor that into the cost.

    Reader Options

Many controllers accept a Wiegand reader. Pick models with a built in prox reader, or add one from our prox card reader lineup. For a code only entry, browse standalone keypads.

    Common Questions

What is a cellular gate call box?

It is an entry intercom with a built in cellular radio. Visitors press a button or enter a code, the unit calls a resident's phone, and the resident presses a digit to open the gate. No landline is needed.

How many users can a gate keypad hold?

It varies by model, from a handful of codes on basic wireless keypads to thousands on commercial units. Check the code capacity against your user count with room to grow.

Can an intercom open a gate and a door?

Yes, if it has two relay outputs or a second door module. Each relay wires to a separate operator or electric lock. See telephone entry and intercoms for more options.
