How to Choose Pedestrian Gate Hardware

Measure the Gate Frame First

Gate locks are sized to the width of the gate frame tube. Locinox and Gatemaster sell each lock in several sizes. Gatemaster 1030 models fit 1/2" to 1-1/4" frames, and 4060 models fit 1-1/2" to 2-3/8" frames. Measure the tube and the gap between gate and post, and note if the post is square or round. Round post and chain link adapters are available.

Pick the Lock Function

• Keyed locks for staff-only gates.
• Mechanical code locks, like the Locinox Vinci and Gatemaster Superlock, need no wiring or batteries.
• Free exit and quick exit locks let people leave without a key or code.
• DAC Industries panic exit bar kits put a push bar on the inside of a gate on an exit path.
• Electric strikes, maglocks and motorized drop bolts tie into a keypad or card reader.

Size the Gate Closer

A lock only works if the gate closes all the way. Hydraulic closers control the speed and finish with enough force to latch. Rate the closer to the gate weight. The Locinox Tiger is listed for gates up to 165 lb, the Mammoth 180 up to 330 lb and the Mammoth HD up to 440 lb.

Pool Gates

Most US pool barrier codes require pool gates to open outward away from the pool, self-close and self-latch. If the latch release is less than 54 inches above the bottom of the gate, it goes on the pool side. D&D MagnaLatch top pull latches and SureClose hinge closers are common for this. Check with your local inspector before install.
