How to Choose Gate Operator Accessories

Backup Power and Solar

A power outage can leave a gate stuck closed. DC operators run off batteries, so they keep cycling for a while when AC power drops. AC operators need a battery backup inverter sized to the motor. The DoorKing 1000-083, for example, handles one 1 HP or two 1/2 HP operators. For sites with no power, a solar kit runs a DC operator. Size the panel to the daily cycle count and the hours of winter sun.

Cold Weather

Batteries, motors and hydraulic fluid lose performance in the cold. Heater kits keep the control box and gearbox warm. LiftMaster has separate heater kits for AC, DC and 460V operators, so match the kit to the operator. FAAC hydraulic operators come with regular oil or Arctic oil for low temperatures.

Mounting Hardware

• Pad mount pedestals set a slide operator at the right height above the concrete pad.
• Post mount kits and pipe stands work where a pad is not practical.
• Underground swing operators, such as the FAAC 750, need a foundation plate and support box set in the ground.

Barrier Arms and Signals

Barrier arms come in several lengths. LED arms make the arm easy to see at night. Red, green and amber strobe lights tell drivers when to stop and go at a busy entry. Add gate and door safeties to finish a UL 325 install, and use replacement parts for anything worn out.

Common Questions

Do I need a surge suppressor on a gate operator?

On most sites, yes. Lightning and line surges are a common cause of failed control boards. A suppressor on the incoming AC line protects the board and the accessories wired to it.

What is a fire access box?

It is a locked box that holds a key or switch so fire and police crews can open the gate. Many fire departments require one on gated communities, so check local rules. Openers are in residential operators.
